Dictee is a French word. It means dictation or to write under dictation. The project is a full length multi media dance theater performance based on the text of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s seminal literary collage. Cha was an American novelist and artist. Her most known work is called “Dictee” – it’s a book that focuses on 7 womean who are Korean revolutionists, Cha’s mother and Cha herself, all connected trough their struggles. The work combines spoken text (poetry), movement, music, experimental sound and video and the performing artists Jen Shyu and Soomi Kim. Together they create “exhilarating, luminous, collaborative new work”. Dictee shares the stories of brave women who are ordinary, revolutionary and extraordinary in their common experiences of suffering and the transcendence of suffering.
The team was invited to take part in 3rd National Asian American Theater Festival to be held in Los Angeles, June 16th-26th. You can support the creative theater-makers by helping cover the costs needed to buy costumes, set pieces, props, video expenses as well as provide artist and designer fees or travel expenses for 4 people.
