The Face of Defeat.

A posting from Poetry Café

We don’t know what Sandy Nicholson, photographer, had in mind when she planned the photo series for the book “2nd: The Face of Defeat” but we know what she learned from it: ‘Coming 2nd, I began to think as I looked at these photographs, is better than coming first. No room for exaggerated egos or inflated boasting, but a place for pride, inevitable disappointment and a determination to do better next time.’ So, don’t look at these pictures with pity but with hope for the next competition of the portrayed people.

Bob Shoudt, 2. bei der World Hamburger Eating Championship: I had hamburger in my left nostril
and I couldn’t breathe. I thought, if the food comes up I will lose $7,500 and I’ve spent all this time getting here.
I have got to keep it down.

Cady Wu: 2. bei einer Barista Meisterschaft: I felt unbelievable. I was too tired— I had only slept two hours the night before, I was practicing all night. I was little bit disappointed, I was also so happy. It’s really a complicated feeling.

Dean Deverell, 2. beim Breeders Cup: The rider can be happy with second. . . but sometimes second is very costly. The owners, the trainers, and the public don’t like it.
