Many people have heard of Patrick Blanc, the garden artist with green hair. For those who have not: Monsieur Blanc is a French botanist, who has become famous for his mur végétal (vertical garden). He has achieved two things: his gardens hang vertically on walls and he has created a special system by which his gardens stay fresh and lush, inspiring and pleasing people for a long period of time. The combination of felt, latticework and a watering system provides support and sufficient water.
Especially well known are Blanc’s projects in cooperation with great architects such as Jean Nouvel. For him he created outside walls but also the inside walls of the office of the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. Stéphane Martin, director of the museum, says it puts him in a good mood when he arrives at the office. The walls are “pretty, friendly and enjoyable”.
We find his gardens inspiring and poetic – every living room should have its own vertical garden ;-)
The WebEcoist shows more pictures of his gardens on his blog.
I like to reintegrate nature where one least expects it.”
